'Greater Durham Special Olympics' Athletics coach Janet White receives a 'Coaches Association of Ontario’ award

posted Sep 29, 2014, 12:48 PM by Rebecca Levin

The entire Special Olympics community in Durham Region is very proud of our ‘Athletics’ head coach Janet White.

Janet was one of nine coaches in the province that were recognized at the ‘2014 Ontario Coaching Excellence Awards’ this past Saturday in Toronto.

Janet’s award was in the ‘Everyone Matters’ category, where the recipient has positively influenced the culture of their team, organization or community by embracing diversity and inclusiveness.  Over time, they have demonstrated the value of committing to an all-encompassing approach and have made a difference by reaching out across genders and age groups to newcomers and disabled athletes.

“Since taking on the job of head coach for the Special Olympics Track and Field program in Durham Region, Janet has helped her athletes understand that even in an individual sport like track and field they are all part of a team.  Janet has many NCCP coaching certifications and also mentors some of her athletes to become certified coaches.  Janet delivers well-structured practices each week that help develop each of the athletes to the best of their abilities.  She achieves this for athletes of all levels – from those who celebrate a 50m run without stopping or crossing their lane, to athletes who have gone on to win medals at provincial, national and world games”.

We thank all of the athletes (and their parents/care givers) who came out to assist the ‘Coaches Association of Ontario’ film their video on Janet.

Thanks also to the ‘Athletics’ program mother and athlete for taking the time and doing the work to nominate Janet.

Congratulations and well deserved JANET … you are certainly a “coach on fire”!
